Mary Paden joined the Army National Guard in July 2004 as a Medic with a rank of PFC assigned to the 205th Medical Battalion in Kansas City, MO. Due to a custody battle, she was unable to leave for Basic Training right away, so she was placed in the Recruit Sustainment Program. While in RSP she excelled in land navigation, marching, field ops and did alright in Physical Fitness even though she was 29 when she was recruited and enlisted. She was recommended for Officers Candidate School 4 times before she was medically discharged due to Asthma in June of 2006. (Yes, I was crushed...) She wasn't able to go to Iraq to help save lives as she hoped, but she did get to bandage a lot of blisters and deal with nasty things you don't even wanna know about!!
